About Us
History
The Tulsa Youth Council (TYC) was created in 2000, after City
Councilors recognized a need for an active, empowered youth voice
within local government. In 2008, the Tulsa Youth Council
underwent a strategic planning process, designed to provide greater
influence in local political decisions, and provide a new purpose
to the organization.
The 2009-2010 Tulsa Youth Council marks the first year of this
newly-formed organization. To date, they:
- coordinated a local election with Tulsa Public Schools,
providing a youth voice in the municipal election process;
- are planning Tulsa's first Youth Summit, to be held on June
26th at the Tulsa Convention Center;
- developed a youth television show that will be broadcast on
TGOV, Tulsa's local government access channel; and
- are pursuing a political agenda that includes a
texting-while-driving ban, a youth presence on City commissions,
and increased sex education in schools.
Structure
The Youth Council is modeled after Tulsa's city government: two
representatives are selected from each City Council district, and
three are selected from the city at-large. Youth Councilors
serve for one-year terms, but are welcome to apply and serve for
multiple years.
As an official City commission, applicants must be appointed by
the Mayor and confirmed by the City Council.
