He graduated from Jenks High School in 1985 and went on to obtain his BBA and MBA from Baylor University. He also is a graduate of Leadership Tulsa.

Lakin is known for working with donors, community leaders and elected officials to improve the Tulsa area. Before working for TCF, Lakin worked for Baylor University's Office of Development.

Councilor Lakin is an active member of many community and governmental organizations. Before running for office, Lakin served on the State Board of Education, Metropolitan Tulsa Transit Authority and the Transportation Advisory Board. He resigned these positions in order to serve as City Councilor for District 8. He also recently served as president of the board for the Tulsa Zoo and helped during the zoo's privatization efforts. Lakin still serves on the boards of the Folds of Honor Foundation, Tulsa Area United Way, Jenks Publics Schools Foundation and the Tulsa Community College Foundation, to name a few. The Lakins are members of Southern Hills Baptist Church, where Councilor Lakin serves as a deacon.

He has been married to his wife, Adriane, for 16 years. The couple has three sons, Brooks, Alex and Cooper. In his free time, Lakin likes to spend time with his wife and kids. Lakin has been to the last 30 Indy 500 races, and his eldest son Brooks recently became the fourth generation to join this family tradition. Lakin is also an avid hiker and climber. He has reached the summit of all 54 of Colorado's 14,000 foot peaks.

Lakin said he loves Tulsa, and wants to see it thriving.

"I see and am part of the positive influence that the charitable and corporate sectors have on the city each day," Lakin said. "I want the governmental sector to become more of a positive and driving force, leading our city to places it should be, respectful of its past traditions and successes. "
